Hounds Are Top Dog on Friday Night

In an exciting game that came down to the last seconds, Dixie came from behind to overcome the Milton Union Bulldogs and walk off the field top dogs on senior night. In the 1st half Dixie struggled to establish a running game and had turnovers. Milton Union was able to enter the locker room at halftime with a 14-6 lead.

The second half began as a flag fest, the two teams amassed more yardage in penalties than they did on offense.  But the Dixie passing offense established itself and Dixie kept pace with the Bulldogs. At one point, they were down by 2 scores but managed to go ahead on 4th and 6 when Devin Worley threw a pass to Dakota Grice for a 72 yard touchdown with 2:55 left in the game.

But that lead didn’t last a minute as Milton Union scored quickly and were back on top. It was time for the 2 minute drill. The go ahead score was set up by a Seth Grubb catch to the 13 yard line. Devin Worley scrambled on a passing play and ran the 13 yards to score and put Dixie up for good with 15 seconds left on the clock. Milton Union tried for a hail mary with 2.8 seconds left in the game but the Hounds defended well and time ran out for a 38-35 victory.

Scoring for Dixie: AJ Shockey 40 yard pass from Worley; Worley 1 yd td run, Worley 35 yd TD run, Dakota Grice 32 yd pass; Grice 82 yard pass; Worley 13 yd td run.

Dixie now has a 5-4 record as they go visit Carlisle next week. Dixie is not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, but a lot would have to go their way to catapult themselves into the top 8. On the other hand, they have guaranteed for themselves at least a .500 record and if they defeat Carlisle then they would have a winning record and also knock Carlisle out of any chance of making the post season.

Arcanum Advances

Arcanum won a rematch against the Dixie Greyhounds in the opening round the state volleyball tournament in Brookville. They won the first match about a week ago and although they repeated their 3 set win – it was a little harder to pull out that 3rd set win this time around.  The scoring was 25-10, 25-13, 25-22.

Tigers Win Thriller at South

The Ansonia Tigers won a thriller at Twin Valley South on Friday night. The game would not be decided until the very end of the last quarter.  It was a contest where both teams left it all on the field and went all out for 4 quarters.  The Tigers made some gutsy calls down the stretch and managed to come away with a 35-28 victory.

Patriots Playing for Pride

Both Tri-Village and Tri-County North have similar records - the Patriots entered the game with 8 wins and North entered the game with 7 wins.  And at this stage of the season, the teams are jockeying for position in the middle of the league.  With a game away from home at the end of the season, it would have been easy for the Patriots to mail it in and call it a night.  But the team was resilient and played with pride. It took 5 sets, and also playing from behind - but a “we are not quitting on this night” Patriots team rode home with the victory, spoiling North’s senior night.  Scoring was: 25-22, 14-25, 22-25, 25-17, 15-3.

Arcanum Dispatches Dixie

Arcanum was able to vanquish the SWBL’s Dixie Greyhounds in 3 sets to start their last week of the regular season.  The first two sets went as planned but the last set saw a scrappy Dixie team play even with Arcanum for the 1st half of the match and Arcanum had to get back into their groove and when they did they punched the accelerator and breezed past the Hounds for the win. The scoring was 25-11, 25-16, 25-13.

Arcanum Routs North

On paper the game should have been an easy win for Tri-County North who entered Fridays game with a record of 4-2.  Arcanum on the other hand, only had a single win. But when a team prepares well and you get momentum on your side – well that is how upsets happen.  A snowball became an avalanche as Arcanum took a 13-8 halftime lead and completely dominated the second half as they steamrolled to a 39-16 victory.

TVS Ties Botkins

Twin Valley South tied Botkins 2-2 on Tuesday evening.  Jacob Wells scored both of the goals for the Panthers.  Bryant Marker assisted one of the goals.

Coach Young, "I was very proud the way my kids fought today. We had a 2-0 lead with under 10 minutes to go and we ran out of gas.  I had one starter who was sick and another one that got a concussion early in the first half.  Then I had one of my center backs start cramping. We just didn't have things go right for us today.  My kids did what they were told though and they gave it their all on the field."

He continued, "It really hurts that we came out with a tie, because it seems like we have a trend of struggling to close out games late.  I thought we controlled the game as well.  Botkins is a good team, but if we were to see them in the tournament, I would be confident with my boys.  It was just unfortunate for us tonight, and we just need to take this and learn from it."
