Jets Fall to Panthers in Overtime

The 2nd place Franklin Monroe Jets had to begin their weekend with an away game at Twin Valley South – a team that always dangerous under the coaching of Tony Augspurger.  The JV game was presage of what was to come in the varsity game, a close contest with many lead changes and the outcome decided in overtime by a narrow margin.  Fans definitely got their moneys worth in this closely fought CCC contest. The teams would tie at 51 in regulation and in overtime Ryan Bassler gave the Panthers the lead with a trey at the 6 second mark.  The Jets got the ball into the hands of Bryce Filbrun in the last seconds, but Willie Bowman, who was also scored a game high 30 points, swatted the shot away to preserve the 61-60 victory.

Franklin Monroe: Ressler 8, Fibrun 12, Rhoades 2, Cable 15, Hesler 14, Conley 9.
TVS: R. Bassler 8, Cottingim 3, Osborn 2, Wells 8, Bowman 30, Lovely 10

Bradford Mistakes Costly Against Brookville

It was senior night at Brookville High School, so a robust hometown crowd was on hand.  Maybe it was the noise level or maybe it was the 1st game of the week on the road, but Bradford was consistently cold shooting from the floor.  And offensively they also had problems holding onto the ball – allowing 25 turnovers on the night.  Despite all this they kept pace with Brookville until the last quarter when Bradford allowed the Blue Devils to go on an 8-1 run to break the game open for a 33-21 win.

Scoring: Skip Miller 16, Hannah Fout 3, Emma Canan 2.
Leading rebounders: Skip Miller 12,  Bianca Keener 9.  Assists: Skip Miller 2

Tigers Frozen Out Against Panthers

The pregame featured an award ceremony for North's Audrey Stupp.  She recently set a single game record for North - scoring 43 points. This eclipsed Rachael Heindl's single game record of 40 points. Current TCN  Coach O'Dell held the record previous to this with 29 points.  Pictured above is a 'Triple Threat' of top scorers.

Ansonia was cold shooting from the field against Tri-County North.  They ran with the Panthers in the 1st quarter when the play was focused on transition. They were only behind by 5 – 19 to 14. It began at a fast pace with both teams running the court.  But when the game settled down into a half court pace, that change favored North.  They scored both inside and outside.  Meanwhile Ansonia was cold in their half court sets.  A 10 point half time deficit grew and by games end it was 65-44 in favor of North....

Battered Blackhawks Begin Tough Week

Mississinawa Valley is in the middle of a rough stretch.  Two of their varsity players were recently injured in a car crash and are undergoing a concussion protocol.  So 2 down is tough enough for any team.  Then the Blackhawks lost their league leading rebounder Sidnie Hunt to an accident at a skating rink over the weekend.  Hunt had dislocated a finger and was also not available for the game.   So when it rains – it pours for the Blackhawks.  Three players down, the Blackhawks limped into Tuesdays game against the Panthers.  Their youth and inexperience showed as North had their way in a 55-18 victory.

Patriots Fade in Fourth

The Tri Village Patriots are deep into league play in mid January.  The games get critical as they count to the league standings and also the state tournament is on the horizon. Teams are jockeying for a good seed in the tournament.  So every game matters all the more as teams across Ohio work on the 2nd half of their season. So with this situation the Patriots had to face a resurgent Tri-County North team that has caught a wave this winter.  After floundering for many years at the bottom of the league, North has been playing better ball as of late.  The Patriots played with North for most of the game, but they were outpaced down the stretch and dropped a game on the road  62-50....

Ansonia Gets Hot Hand in 2nd Half

It is tough to get a win on the road in the CCC and particularly hard to win at Twin Valley South. Ansonia has been frustrated many times in West Alexandria over the years.  But the Tigers came out of the locker room on a mission and with quiet determination they expanded their 1 point halftime lead. And even after clearing their bench in the last minutes of the 4th quarter they were able to drive away with a decisive win on the road over South 60-46.

Bradford Overcomes First Half Funk to Edge South For Win

To say both teams were slow to start in the first half was an understatement.  Both teams had to shake off the Christmas break doldrums.  It wasn’t until after halftime that the two teams seemed to wake up and begin to play real basketball.  And what a second half it was, with several lead changes and the game finally came down to the last minute where Bradford was able to edge out South to notch a league win 43-39.

North Wins Preble Shawnee Holiday Tournament

The final day of the Preble Shawnee Holiday Tournament was well worth the price of admission.  Both games were hard fought and came down the last few minutes.  In the opening round, South narrowly lost to Preble Shawnee while North had a close game with Northwestern, winning in the last minutes padding their lead with free throws.

South had to battle against the Northwestern press.  It was effective at times, so South had to struggle against it. After going back and forth in the 3rd quarter.  South was able to capture a lead in the 4th quarter and fought hard to maintain it. At the 1 minute mark it was a 1 point game. But Ryan Bassler calmly sunk 2 free throws to extend the lead to 3 points. Northwestern scored from the field with seconds to make it a 1 point game again. Willie Bowman provided the final margin of victory when he shot a layup with seconds left in the game for a 66-63 final score.

This set the table for the grand finale.  North and Shawnee played a fast and furious game with both teams racing down the court in transition during the 1st quarter.  North played some man to man, but used a zone defense to put pressure on the wings. Shawnee used a man to man defense, but pressed.

There were a total of 4 technical fouls in the game. 1 against North and 3 against Shawnee.  The home town fans were not happy about this and the gym got loud.  North was tied with Shawnee with about  minute left in the 1st quarter but got the lead and held onto it and at halftime it was 33-24. Shawnee made some good runs in the 2nd half, but North held onto the lead. And when Shawnee started fouling late in the game North calmly toed the line and sunk their free throws to win 62-53.

Championship Scoring:

Shawnee: Thompson 9, Worley 9, Lewis 10, Moore 13, Bates 9.  North: McCollough 37, Stinson 16, Heindl 6, Jackson 4, Lockwood 2, Stinson 2.

Scoring for Twin Valley South: Mylan Crews 15, Kelsie Shafer 12, Mckenzie Neal 4, Abby Bingham 2, Evelyn Woodgeard 1
TVS Record: 5-5

Coach Rike:

Tonight's game was a different quarter a different story for the Panthers. The first quarter may have been our worst one this season. The second quarter we got our composure back and did a good job getting back in the game. The third quarter we looked liked the team that went 3-0 last week as we took the lead heading into the 4th quarter. Then in the 4th quarter we got in our heads mentally and let the size of our opponent play the biggest factor in the game.

We know going into every contest that we are the smaller team on the floor. When we are at our best we don't let it make that much of an impact, but when we are at our worst, not only do we see the size contrast on the rebounding end, but our girls start to struggle making simple shots because they are always in a hurry before size closes in on them. Rushed shots cost us big time tonight as we went 13 for 41 with shots in the paint. Stivers 6'0" post player - Emily Fletcher just proved to be too much for us tonight as she put up 12 points and kept us from scoring under the basket. In the losing effort the Panthers were led by Mylan Crews with 15 points and Kelsie Shafer put up a double double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
