South Surges, Pauses, Rallies Behind Cole for Win

This past week seemed to be the week for big first quarters. South squared off again against Shawnee at Shawnee for a rematch of the Shawnee Holiday Tournament which South won.  South was the team that made it look easy in the early going – sprinting to a 16-2 advantage by the end of the first quarter.  But Shawnee would not go down easy – which lead to an exciting second half.

It has been an up and down week for South.  They first played Carlisle, who had only lost 2 games this year to a triple overtime, only to lose in the final seconds.  They then played Bradford where Wes Cole scored his 1000th point in the victory.  His teammates worked hard to help him achieve his goal. Cole would also be a presence in the waning minutes of South’s game against Shawnee.

After opening play in a zone defense, Shawnee changed to man to man in the second quarter. Additionally the team had been cold from the floor, but found their range as the game went on and quickly made up ground. South did have to adjust on offense and defense as JJ Utz had to leave the court when he rolled his ankle in the early part of the quarter. He was able to return later but by the half Shawnee had made up ground and was down 17-21.

In the third quarter Shawnee was hitting the boards hard and getting second chance shots on rebounds.  South switched to a zone offense and Shawnee responded by shooting from the perimeter. In the last part of the quarter, South’s shooting grew cold and Shawnee took advantage getting the lead for the first late in the quarter 29-28.  South woke up and tied the score 31-all by quarters end.

Shawnee handed South two gifts to start the 4th quarter. South got two steals that they turned into points and were able to regain the lead.  South proceeded to go on a 14-2 run and appeared to have the game put away. But again South hit a patch where the team was not dropping shots.  And they missed some key free throws to allow Shawnee back in the game. With 36 seconds left, it was 46-44 with the momentum back to the Arrows.  But Wes Cole rose to the occasion hitting a timely jump shot and when he was fouled in the remaining seconds, he calmly sank his free throws – cementing the South victory 51-44.  It was a fine way for Cole to end his week.

“There are some teams where there really is a home court advantage.”stated coach Augspurger,  “Where a team plays so much better than they do on the road.  And that is true with Preble Shawnee. Over the years they are better at home than they are on the road. Years where we have to play them twice at home are always challenging. “

He continued, “We had a great first quarter, our defensive intensity was outstanding.  They got some points in the second quarter, while we struggled.  They did a good job of getting dribble penetration on us. We switched to a zone to take that away and that seemed to slow them down.”

Wes Cole scoring 1,000 points, “Wes started the year pressing a little bit.  He has done a good job of getting back to who he is. He is a great competitor – you will find that out if you are around him at all.  He hates to lose and that is a key to what makes him so good. Against Bradford the guys knew he was close, and all 4 starters gave assists to Wes to make sure he made his goal. ”

Dixie Ends Week on Down Note

Dixie had a promising start to the week on Tuesday with an exciting come from behind victory against Oakwood – a team that is in second place in the big school division of the SWBL.  But Dixie was not able to springboard off of that momentum in weekend games with Madison and National Trail.  Instead falling to Madison 65-45 and then to National Trail 63-56.
The Trail game was an exciting one. Both teams have similar records – each came into the game with 5 wins.  But when closely matched teams pair up, it can lead to an exciting game.  There were multiple lead changes and each team had some good runs with the game not being decided until the final minute.
Trail was cold shooting out of the game, so it was Dixie that had the early advantage.  With 3:10 left Dixie was up 9-3.  But Trail got their motor running and closed out the quarter in a flurry and closed the first stanza with the lead 16-13.

Dixie had been driving to the basket to earn their points and Trail went from man to man defense to a zone defense to counter that.  Dixie then staked out the perimeter and started to connect from long distance, pulling Trail back into man to man.  In a similar fashion, Dixie went from man to man to zone towards the end of the half as Trail extended their lead – closing out the half on top 38-25.

Dixie had a rough time making up the differential in the 3rd quarter.  Both teams scrapped and made hustle plays. And when bodies are flying, fouls start to accumulate – for both teams.  Shane Hale got his third foul late in the quarter.  By early in the 4th quarter, both teams were getting bonus.

Trail entered the last quarter with a double digit lead.  Dixie started to press and they were effective in getting turnovers – both from steals and from Trail mishandling the ball.  And so they began to chip away at the Trail lead. Trail went into a slowdown style of offense in the half court.  Spreading the court and being deliberate with the ball.

Both teams were in double bonus but Trail was hitting their shots from the charity stripe while Dixie was 4 of 12 for that critical quarter.  Still Dixie had a nice 9-2 run in the waning minutes to make it a 2 point game (56-54) when Cody Grubb connected from the field at the one minute mark.  From there Dixie resorted to fouling, but with Trail connecting on their free throws, their lead slowly extended and it was 63-56 at the buzzer. Justin Leonard had a monster second half for the Greyhounds scoring 14 of his team high 16 points in that span.

“We should never have been in that position, stated coach Williams when asked about the teams 4th quarter comeback, “National Trail played a great game. But we are not playing defense right now. When we beat Preble Shawnee and Oakwood it was because we defended.  We are letting teams cut to the baseline, dribbling around us to the basket, and it puts us in the hole.  We don’t score enough to get into a deep hole.  We have to defend and we are not doing that right now.”

Oakwood: “The Oakwood game we defended. They came out on us early with their talented big guy. But we fought thru it and were able to defend him better in the second half.  If we can defend for 32 minutes instead of 16, you can see the difference.”

Scoring for Dixie: Cody Grubb 12, Justin Leonard 16, Shane Hale 10, Blaine Miller 10, Joe Gengler 3, Justin Keirns 3, Ethan Arnet 2.

South Wins at Last Second

South finally found themselves on the right side of a one basket game.  South has had tough luck when it comes to 1 and 2 point games – losing to two quality teams Stivers and Tri-Village by slim margins. But thanks to a put back at the buzzer, South survived against Valley View for a 50-48 victory. South also had a conference victory over Newton, and so were able to capture two wins on the road after losing at the last second to Tri-Village at home the week before.  So it was good to see that team did not deflate after that loss.

South was able to handle the quick guard play of the Indians and generated plenty of offense in a 68-53 victory over the Indians. The referee’s almost wore out their whistles though as Newton shot 27 free throws for the night. The Panthers scored 3 players in double figures – Jacob Bassler  and Anthony Augspurger with 13, and Wes Cole 17.  Also scoring were: Winston Crosier 6, Jake Osborn 9, JJ Utz 6, Jason Utz 2, Josh Cottingim 2.

“Newton does not have a great record, but in some respects they were the worst matchup for us,” stated coach Augspurger afterwards.  “They are short but quick, with good ball handlers. And the guards shoot well from the perimeter.  We just didn’t match up with them as well when they spread the ball out like that.  It was a win, and we controlled it pretty much all the way, but it was frustrating that we didn’t play as well.  And you have to give credit to Newton, they played to their strengths.”
Next up for the Panthers was a furious game with several lead changes at Valley View.  The Spartans have size in the post and decent shooting from outside and despite their record Valley View battled South all night. South lead early, but the Spartans had a decent second quarter and got the lead by halftime.  South lead in the third quarter as their defense stepped up a notch and got some stops.

But the Spartans closed and tied in the decisive last minutes of the game. Anthony Augspurger hit a trey to put South up, but the Spartans responded from behind the arc on their next possession to tie the game right back up.  As the clock wound down, South set up a play for Wes Cole, who shot but missed.  The Panthers went savagely to the boards for the rebound and it was point guard JJ Utz who tapped the ball in just before the buzzer to cement the Panther victory.

“I don’t think we played with as much of a defensive edge as what we’ve done,” commented coach Augspurger, “and that happens sometimes in the middle of the season.  We had a big emotional game last week against Tri-Village.  And there might be a bit of a let down from that, I don’t think we were as steadfast as what we have been.  Valley View has been a Jekyll and Hyde team this year.  They have size and decent shooters – but they are streaky.”

He continued, “I thought the team did a good job on weathering the storm.  We just couldn’t score, shots wouldn’t go down.  But we got some good stops in the last quarter.  As a team we just have to remember that defense is our strength and to always play with that intensity.  Jacob Bassler and Wes Cole did a good job offensively for us.  And JJ Utz did a good job of recognizing the time left in the game, and pretty much batting the ball back to the hoop.”

Jacob Bassler’s weekend: “He is logically our third scorer. He takes more shots and just sometimes needs to be more aggressive. But I thought that he did that this weekend.  He was able to take the ball to the basket at times.  He hit the offensive boards to get rebounds and score.  If he continues to play this way it will be a great benefit to the team.”

Mississinewa Valley (10-3): “They have a 7 game winning streak. They have done a really job overall. They struggled against 3 really good state ranked teams.  They got beat soundly in those games, but they have beat everyone else.  So they are coming in here with some confidence.  They play different zone defenses and we will have to be ready to go after them.”

Scoring for TVS: Cole 20, Jason Utz 2, Jacob Bassler 10, Anthony Augspurger 10, Jake Osborn 6, JJ Utz 4.

Hounds Hammer Arrows

"We played 4 good quarters of basketball for the first time all season," stated Coach Williams after the game. Dixie used an inside/outside game that Shawnee could not defend for long.  Dixie got an early lead, gave it up briefly in the second quarter, but had a strong second half to put Shawnee away 62-43. Shawnee threw all the defenses they could at Dixie in the second half, but Dixie hit clutch shots all night long in the Dog Pound.  At the end of the night Dixie was on top 62-43.

Coming into the game, it appeared that Shawnee would be the team with the momentum.  They are in the middle of the pack in the SWBL and were coming off of a win over second place Carlisle – which gave Carlisle just their second loss this season. Meanwhile Dixie had gotten shelled by league leading Northridge 79-45 on their home court.  So Shawnee had to feel good coming into the game.

But the Hounds have short memories.  Using a zone to box in Arrow post player Thomas Buell and hitting their outside shots, Dixie got an early lead as the game started.  But the Arrows adjusted – hitting some outside shots and causing Dixie to switch to a man to man defense and also doing some half court trapping to get some turnovers and throw Dixie’s offense off rhythm.  Shawnee’s Toby Williams hit a 3 with 22 seconds left in the quarter to knot the game up at 11 all.

And for a period it seemed like Dixie was just going to camp on the perimeter and try to fire up 3’s all night.  But coach Williams told the team during that first break that needed to get the ball inside and challenged post player Cody Grubb to get the inside game going.  Shawnee got the lead early in the 2nd quarter, but with Dixie’s refocused offense having effect on the inside and some half court trapping on defense, Dixie regained the lead.  Shawnee simply was not getting many open shots as the Dixie defense stepped up.

Down by 6 points at halftime, Shawnee doubled down on defense in the second half.  Trying about every defensive alignment in their play book. Zone, man to man, half court trap and finally in the last quarter they did some full court pressing.  Dixie fans did have to get a little uncomfortable when Shawnee scored the first 2 baskets of the last quarter.  But Dixie calmly settled into their groove and went on a 10-2 run of their own to again put the lead at double digits.  Cody Grubb did get his 4th foul midway through the final quarter, however by that time Dixie had a healthy 15 point lead.

Cody Grubb had a great game – scoring only one basket in the first quarter, but going on to score 24 more points in the final 3 quarters to lead all scorers. Freshman Devin Worley netted 13 points. Justin Leonard 6, Shane Hale 2, Blain Miller 10, Joe Gengler 2, Justin Kiernes 2.

An upbeat Coach Williams commented after the game, “I feel relieved, we defended really well today. We played well for all 4 quarters. Usually in a game we have a good quarter, then a bad quarter, but today we were focused for all 4 quarters.”

Cody Grubbs: “I told them that this game has to go from the inside – out. We need to attack their bigs, we need to get some jump shots, we need to drive inside and get some layups.  If we can do that, it will open up our 3 point shooting.  At one point I thought we were just going to settle for 3’s - settle outside and shoot. But we were able to attack the inside and I think they saw how it opened things up.”

Devin Worley, “He is a freshman and he is just starting his 4th game.  But every game he has been playing very well.  He is understanding the game better and is not turning the ball over as much.  As a team we can shoot the ball.  A lot of it is when we take our shots, and sometime our shots are rushed. Today I thought that he and everyone else did a great job getting that extra pass and getting off open shots.”

Hounds Out Pace Panthers

Route 35 neighbors Twin Valley South and Dixie squared off on Monday.  Despite a near even first quarter (11-9 Dixie) where the competition was keen, Dixie rose to shake off South’s challenge and extended their lead to win going away in the second half.  Dixie’s defense was spot on in the third quarter where they limited South to a single basket. When the final horn sounded it was a consummate victory for the Hounds 50-21.  South was lead in scoring by freshman Mylan Crews with 9, while Dixie’s Ashley Leis scored 13.

South’s coach Mabry, “I thought we played well early – we tried some new things defensively to get Dixie off balance.  We also tried some new rotations with the girls.  We’ve struggled offensively trying to find a rhythm.  The girls need to learn that sometimes they need to be a little patient.  We need to work the ball around a little bit and execute a little better.”

He continued, “I know we are a young team – starting a freshmen, a couple of sophomores and a junior that hasn’t played since junior high.  But it’s the middle of season and we should be catching on more. Now we do play well in spurts, we had some good minutes against Mississinewa Valley.  We don’t have much of an inside game, but we need to flash to the post and kick it out if the defense collapses on us.  Doing little things like that can help.”

Newton: “Newton has been playing pretty good lately.  They are fairly athletic.  We will have to see how we match up.”

Dixie’s coach Crowe, “We played our last JV game on Saturday.  They have lost 3 girls this season, so we are playing varsity only the rest of the way.  South – I have to give them credit, they came out to play in the first quarter.  They matched our energy, but I thought they were a lot more intense – they were flying after loose balls and all.  But as the game progressed, I thought that our girls got into the flow of the game.  In the second half, we just kind of took over.  It might have been the day off school, but it took a while to get them motivated.”

Shell and Leis:  “Cassidy Shell has been a real leader this year.  She went from scoring like 2 points a game last year to this year where she is averaging about 12 points a game.  She has really elevated her level, she is a senior that we are going to miss this year. Ashley Leis is a junior and I thought she did a good job of attacking the basket.  She got a lot of good looks close to the rim and knocked down 2 3’s. She’s another kid that elevated her play here halfway thru the season.”

Carlisle: “It should be a good match up. We are in third place in the division and they are in 4th. So it should be a pretty tight game.  It’s funny that we have played several teams in our division twice already, but this will be our first game against them.”

Scoring for Dixie: Joo 4, Wylie 2, Shell 12, Morrison 4, Leis 13, Honeywell 5, Kilbarger 2, Berkte 8. Scoring for TVS: Crews 9, Hutchins 5, Creech 2, Keener 4, Newhart 1.

Pats Over Cats

If you were hoping to see offensive fireworks at the Twin Valley South gym, you were disappointed. But if you wanted to see gritty in your face defense, there was a ton of it on Friday night as two determined teams faced off – the undefeated Tri-Village Patriots and the TVS Panthers.  The Patriots have shown the ability to put up 100 points on the scoreboard, while South has strangled teams with their brand of defense.

South started with a zone type of defense, but shifted to a man to man.  Tri-Village stayed mainly in a man to man defense.  South used a 4 out and 1 in type of offense in the early going, but went to an offense where they could attack the basket better after a while.  Tri-Village did try to press some, but South seemed to handle the pressure fairly well.

With a smaller lineup, South seemed to have problems on the offensive boards in the early going.  Getting just one shot most possessions.  JJ Utz had one sequence where he gave up two back to back turnovers, but made up for it the next possession by getting open under the basket for an easy layup. Every Panther basket was needed in this low scoring game where points were hard to come by. Then Jason Utz hit 2 free throws in the last minute of the half to pull South even, but Patriot Mason McCabe hit a shot with seconds left to put Tri-Village on top 15-13.

Tri-village was able to extend their lead in the 3rd period and entered the last quarter with a 6 point lead.  At one point Tri-Village was up by 10 and in a low scoring game that seemed hard to overcome.  But South worked hard in the quarter and made up ground rapidly at the end thanks to some timely 3 point daggers .  The Panther charge culminated with Wes Cole hitting a 3 point shot with about 20 seconds left to knot the ball game at 36 all.

There was a time out and South set up their defense. But Tri-Village’s Tyler VanWinkle found Colton Linkous who shot a buzzer beater that sealed the 38-36 win for the Patriots. South has been a hard luck team this season. They have shown that they can play with the best, but have come up just short against some very talented teams.

“Couldn’t be more satisfied with their effort,” stated Coach Augspurger afterwards, “We defended well against a team that has a lot of offense.  They got like 3 or 4 good looks during the game, the rest of their shots were contested. But they defended us well too, they have a very tough defense.”

He continued, “We are not going to play a team better than Tri-Village,  and what Friday taught me was that if our defensive pressure is effective against them, then our defensive pressure is going to affect everyone.  We are a work in progress – our defense continues to get better and better.   We are finding better ways to score on offense. The loss to Tri-Village pretty much ends any championship hopes, now we have 10 games to be the best tournament team that we can be. I think that this team can really make some noise come tournament time.”

Newton and Valley View:  “Newton has two pretty good shooters that we will need to defend. Valley View likes to run the court.  The last 4 seasons we are 0-4 against them.  We have not had any success against them as of late.  This year we have a chance to turn that around.”

Scoring for TVS: Cole 12, Jason Utz 2, Cottingim 3, Bassler 6, Augspurger 6, Osborn 2, JJ Utz 5. Rebounding: Wes Cole 5, Jake Osborn 4, Anthony Augspurger 3. Assists: Augspurger 4, Cole 3.

Next weekend the Panthers will be on the road playing at Newton and Valley View.
